(If I Believed in Luck and Blessings)

Today was day two of Visual Arts Camp orientation.  The entire staff was paid to run around the Metropolitan Museum of Art, finding and drawing details in pieces.  Starting next week, we get to do the same, but with about 90 kids between us.

This is the whole summer.

The director of the Philip Coltoff Center came to our orientation yesterday.  We had bagels, fruit, and coffee.  Surveying the room, he smiled as he recognized what he called the core group of returners.  He told us that the center had been open for 119 years.

“This is the last one, so let’s make it the best one yet.”

We were calm.  Surprisingly calm.  Deep down, everyone is terrified about the camps, day cares, nursery schools, afterschool programs, and community services that will be ended once the center closes.

“The best way to make sure this is a good summer is to remember: if you’re not having fun, the kids aren’t having fun.  So if you’re not having fun, take a step back and figure out why.”

We will do our jobs now and cry later.

I'm working at a camp this summer too! Mine's an educational one though, so we don't get any camp songs. :(

You should sing educational songs!

I work at a visual arts camp.  There’s not that much singing here, either…but there is a lot of makin’ stuff and seein’ museum things.

Dear girls in my backyard,

1) Who are you?  Where did you come from, and why are you here?  I’ve lived in this apartment for twenty years.  How do I not know you?

2) SHUT THE FUCK UP.  It’s Sunday night.  Yeah, maybe there’s like, 11 minutes left to Pride Day.  But it’s 11 minutes left until Monday, which is a day when people get up to go to work.

3) The world does not give a shit about how drunk you are.  It’s not cute.

4) It’s after 10 PM, so that means it’s quiet hours.  For real.  This isn’t a college thing, it’s a Co-Op thing and I can legally call security on your asses.

I spent a weekend in New Paltz

It was a while back, when I was helping Dexter move into his new house.  Of course, there wasn’t so much to eat.  We had rice, ground beef, crackers, cereal, and maybe some slices of cucumber or an apple if we were lucky.  It was hard to figure out the prices of everything in terms of buying furniture and balancing them with necessities.

I went home after five days.  I walk through the door of my apartment, and unwillingly into my mother’s arms.  She holds me for a moment before stepping back to look at me.  I drop my bags on the floor and head to my room.

“Oh my god, you’re so…thin!  How did you do that?  You should show me your secrets, girlie.”

I promptly went to the kitchen.  I don’t remember what I grabbed first, but I ate.  And I ate.  And I ate.  Even though she likes the way I look when I’m starving, I don’t like the way I feel.

She doesn’t understand that it’s okay for my thighs to touch.

Today

I killed a wolf, and immediately regretted it.

There was a rainstorm, but now I have a brick house to hide in and I like it.

I saw an island of dead trees.

I made arrows.

Dear Verizon,

Thanks for bending my phone over and doing it in the butt with no permission.  It’s not even a flip phone and I didn’t know it would even bend like that.  Also, your FAQ sucks.  And my phone wants its lunch money back.

I haven’t taken my pills in about two days.  Not sure if the good feeling will last much longer.  I do have some fears in going about every day life, and I don’t want to fuck myself over in the long run, but life is awesome at the moment.

Found a spill on the lowest glass shelf.

Figured, “this fits in the bathtub, let’s go sponge!”

The tub is filled with glass that crumbled from my hands, instantaneously.
